But private duty nurses found the per-diem model dissatisfying and many stayed in the private-duty field.

In fact, many organizations have banned private duty nursing, and even nurse unions have begun to speak out against it. The simple reason for the shift is a lack in staffing and insufficient resources in drug room.

Private duty nursing is an unpaid type of care, despite the popularity of in-home services. Private nurses are paid by the client out of their own pocket. However, insurance will usually cover them in proportion to their medical needs. Even if the client needs medication once a day, some insurance plans will pay the entire arrangement. After the client ceases to require medical care, insurance will no longer pay for any nursing services.
